MANILA, Philippines – Former PXC flyweight champion Ale Cali was shot dead for still unknown reasons on Sunday, August 16.

Davao City Police Department confirmed the tragic incident but refused to divulge other details pending completion of investigation.

However, Cali’s friend who requested anonymity gave the information that the 25-year old fighter was shot in the head by an unidentified gunman in Ulas, Davao City at around 10:30 am on Sunday.

The source added that the motive could have been a personal vendetta arising from a business deal or a traffic altercation.

“It can be one of two things: it could be a personal grudge or a road rage incident. We’ll find out soon. Last I heard, it’s about a business he invested in,” he said.

PXC chief operating officer JP Calvo was shocked upon hearing the dreadful news and sent his sympathies to Cali’s family.

“We are deeply saddened with this irreplaceable loss. We are sending our sincerest condolences to bereaved family of Ale Cali. He was an exemplary champion and a good person,” he said.

Cali (5-3) rose to stardom in February 2012 when he captured the PXC flyweight title against Guamanian stalwart Jesse Taitano via a third-round technical knockout before he successfully defended it with a third-round stoppage of compatriot Erwin Tagle 9 months later.

The 5-foot-5 native of Davao City dropped the 125-pound division’s top prize to Louis Smolka in November 2013 by way of first-round technical knockout.

Cali was last seen in action when he was submitted by Ernesto Montilla Jr. with a first-round armbar in March 2014.

“The Young Gun” was penciled to have his comeback bout as part of PXC’s fight card in November. –
