Duterte Eyes Review of Arroyo Cases

MANILA – Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte will push for an urgent review of the cases filed against former president Gloria Macapagal–Arroyo if he is elected president.
Duterte, a former fiscal, said he is used to assessing and evaluating evidence. He vowed to “let justice run its course.”
If Arroyo, now congresswoman of Pampanga, is guilty, she should be punished, the candidate of the PDP-Laban said.
Arroyo is presently under hospital arrest at the Veteran’s Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City. She was charged with plunder in connection with the P366-million Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office intelligence funds. The Commission on Elections also filed charges of electoral fraud against her over the “Hello, Garci” scandal in 2007.
“Tingnan natin. Abogado ako. Kung talagang sabit ka, sabit ka,” said Duterte. “We will just … review all these cases. Let us see what happens.”
Duterte, a known ally of Arroyo, defended the latter during her 2011 arrest at the airport.
He accused then Justice secretary Leila De Lima of “kidnapping” since Arroyo was stopped and prevented from leaving the country without an arrest warrant.
When President Benigno Aquino III delivered his State of the Nation Address this year, Duterte criticized him for still blaming the Arroyo administration for the country’s problems.
“Past is past. It would have been [better] if he mentioned what he will do from this day forward toward the last day of his term rather than keep on blaming and accusing the previous administration,” said the Davao City mayor. “What for?”/PN
