SAYS DAVAO MAYOR’S ALLY
An ally of Rodrigo Duterte believes the Davao City mayor’s pronouncements about supporting Vice President Jejomar Binay’s presidential bid has helped the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) bet’s performance in the latest Pulse Asia survey.
“Si Mayor Rody kasi kinampanya si Binay… Mukhang nakatulong din kay VP Binay yung sinabi ni Mayor Duterte na kapag siya po ay ma-disqualify ay magbi-Binay po siya,” Davao City Rep. Karlo Alexei Nograles told GMA News Online.
The Pulse Asia survey conducted from December 4 to 11, 2015, showed Binay getting the nod of 33 percent of the 1,800 respondents who were registered voters aged 18 and above from different parts of the country.
At second place were Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte with 23 percent and Senator Grace Poe with 21 percent.
Behind them was former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas with 17 percent, followed by Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago with 4 percent.
The respondents were asked: “Sa mga taong nasa listahang ito, sino ang inyong iboboto bilang Presidente ng Pilipinas kung ang eleksion ng 2016 ay gaganapin ngayon at sila ay mga kandidato? (one answer only)”
Duterte’s substitution as presidential candidate for PDP-Laban was accepted by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) last week. But the tough-talking local executive is still facing disqualification cases before the poll body.
He has since said that he will support Binay in the presidential race if he is disqualified. However, yhis pronouncement came after the latest Pulse Asia survey was conducted.
Despite Duterte’s statement of support for Binay’s candidacy, Nograles said the mayor remains determined to seek the presidency.
Nograles appealed to the Comelec to resolve the pending disqualification cases filed against Duterte so they could focus on his campaign.
“Kami po ay umaasang desisyonan na ng Comelec ang [mga kaso tungkol] kay Mayor Rody para kami ay raratsada at aarangkada po muli,” he said.
The lawmaker said he is optimistic that Duterte could clinch the top spot in the voter preference surveys that will be released in the coming months considering the mayor is statistically tied with Poe in the second place in the Pulse Asia poll.
“Babawiin lang din namin yan (survey lead) sa January,” he said. —JST, GMA News
